A student is ready for Sight Words Level 1 as soon as they recognize the sounds made by short vowels and consonant blends (the letter combinations found in the Brainstrong Step 1 and Step 2 flashcard decks). Work on the sight words one level at a time, starting with Level 1 and moving up through Level 4. Level 1 Card Instructions: 1. Sight word cards are alphabetized within the Learn First and Learn Second word set. 2. Begin with the Learn First cards, cards with the blue border. 3. Select 7 to 10 flashcards, this is your Learning set. 4. Separate the cards in the deck with the provided separating cards: Learning, Will Learn, Learned. The Learning card goes on top with the working set. Followed by Will Learn. Learned goes on the bottom of the deck. 5. Practice reading and saying words in the Learning set 4 to 5 times over several days. You may have to teach the pronunciation of some words. 6. Once your student can read and say a word instantly and fluently when they see it, retire the card and place it under the Learned card at the bottom of the deck. 7. Replace retired cards with new cards from the Will Learn set. 8. Practice for 10-15 minutes per day, with the goal of progress not perfection. 9. Once the Learn First cards are completed, repeat the process with the Learn Second cards, cards with the orange border. 10.
